At the heart of the city's Cultural Quarter in Hanley, two magnificent venues – the Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall – bring world-class entertainment to The Potteries, ensuring that residents and visitors don't need to travel to London, Manchester or Birmingham to experience the very best in live performance. The city's theatrical heritage stretches back over a century. The Regent Theatre, originally a 1929 super cinema that hosted performances by The Beatles and Shirley Bassey, was magnificently restored and reopened in 1999 following a £23 million transformation. Today, this stunning 1,600-seat Art Deco venue welcomes the biggest touring West End musicals, national ballet companies, opera, drama and comedy. From award-winning shows like Six and Mean Girls to classics like Fawlty Towers and beloved pantomimes, the Regent Theatre delivers a programme that rivals any regional venue in the country. Next door, the Victorian splendour of Victoria Hall provides an intimate concert hall experience with exceptional acoustics. Built in 1888 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, this 1,467-seat venue is the destination for live music – from rock legends and tribute acts to the BBC Philharmonic and stand-up comedy's biggest names. Built in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, this magnificent Grade II listed venue has been at the heart of Stoke-on-Trent's cultural life for generations. Constructed in local red brick and terracotta as an annex to Hanley Town Hall, Victoria Hall was designed by local borough surveyor Joseph Lobley. The classical Victorian architecture originally accommodated 2,800 people, and the hall quickly established itself as one of the country's premier concert venues. By the 1930s, Victoria Hall had become the favourite venue of the legendary conductor Sir Thomas Beecham. The hall's musical pedigree is exceptional. It was here that Edward Elgar conducted the world premiere of his composition King Olaf (Op 30), cementing Victoria Hall's reputation as a venue of international significance. In 1996, the BBC Philharmonic and the Ceramic City Choir performed a special revival to mark the centenary of that historic premiere. More recently, the venue hosted rock legend Slash's live album "Made in Stoke 24/7/11". Over the years, Victoria Hall has been the scene of numerous concerts, wrestling contests, boxing matches and rock gigs. The venue was comprehensively renovated in the mid-1990s as part of Stoke-on-Trent's Cultural Quarter development, reopening in 1998 with modern facilities while retaining its Victorian character. The refurbishment reduced the seating capacity to 1,467 to improve comfort and safety, and added a magnificent glass-roofed atrium that connects to the neighbouring Regent... - Published: 2025-12-04 - Modified: 2025-12-04 - URL: https://theatreinstoke.co.uk/regent-theatre/ The Regent Theatre stands as one of Stoke-on-Trent's most treasured cultural landmarks. Originally opened in 1929 as a super cinema, this magnificent Art Deco venue was commissioned by Provincial Cinematograph Theatres and designed by architect William E. Trent. The building was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, William Leason, and quickly became the entertainment heart of The Potteries. Throughout its early decades, the Regent served as both a cinema and variety theatre, hosting live performances alongside film screenings. In 1950, under Gaumont British ownership, the venue was renamed The Gaumont and became a legendary concert destination, welcoming iconic performers including Shirley Bassey, Cliff Richard, Stevie Wonder and The Beatles. The building later became a three-screen cinema in 1974 before closing in 1989 following the construction of a new multiplex. By the late 1990s, the building had fallen into disrepair, with the interior dome suffering extensive water damage. The Regent Theatre Trust was established to oversee a magnificent restoration, and following a three-year, £23 million redevelopment as part of Stoke-on-Trent's Cultural Quarter scheme, the theatre was reborn. A new stage house, backstage facilities and orchestra pit were constructed, while the stunning auditorium was lovingly restored to its original Art Deco splendour. The Regent Theatre officially reopened on 22 September 1999 with a performance of the national tour of Annie, and was formally opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in October 1999. Today, the venue is operated by Ambassador Theatre Group on behalf of Stoke-on-Trent City Council. In 1996, CHOOSE LIFE sounded like a challenge. Thirty years on, the landscape has shifted, but the hunger hasn’t. Addiction hasn’t disappeared - it’s shifted. It’s quieter now, more embedded. Less needle, more screen. Less escape, more repetition. The same restless search for something to fill the space. The musical highlights the world we see changing around us, the obscene concentration of wealth, economic and political power in the hands of so few people. It addresses the modern culture of powerlessness. Art the singing-and-dancing Trojan horse that delivers direction and relevance. This isn’t nostalgia, it’s closer than that. The past isn’t revisited - it lingers. The musical doesn’t tidy it. It sits with it. Listens to it. And lets it sing. New songs, classic songs, a musical like never before. Not for the easily confronted. It’s funny, loud, dynamic, and brings a dark dangerous energy never experienced before on the West End stage. “I believe the musical has a bigger, loudly beating human heart than either the book or the film. People need to think about the world we’re living in, and we offer that inspection, but they also really need to sing their hearts out and laugh their heads off - it’s what being human is all about. Who are we? Where do we come from? What does it mean to be human? For thousands of years, such questions have been explored through philosophy and religion, but the answers now seem to lie firmly within the grasp of an empirical approach to the world and our place within it. By peering deep into our past and dragging clues out into the light, science can now provide us with some of the answers to the questions that people have always asked. From the first spark of life on earth 3. 8 billion years ago, we track the evolution and connectivity of all living things. Join us as we follow in the footsteps of our ancestors from Africa into Asia and around the Indian coastline, to Australia, north into Europe and Siberia, and, eventually, to the last continents to be peopled: the Americas. We’ll meet some other human species along the way. We’ll examine the sophistication of some of the earliest civilisations, and we’ll discuss how we know what we know and why we think what we think, what the science can tell us. This is the story of us, from single cell to civilisation.
